For years, specifying advanced architectural lighting often involved a compromise.

Through Native by Design, Lutron is working directly with leading lighting and design manufacturers to integrate Lutron technology, including Ketra and Rania Intelligent Lighting, directly into their products.
These aren’t simply third-party fixtures connected to a Lutron control system.
The Lutron technology is native to the product by design.

What Is Lutron Native by Design?
Native by Design is Lutron’s growing ecosystem of manufacturers whose products are engineered around Lutron lighting or motorization technology.
The concept goes beyond traditional compatibility.
Instead of designing a fixture first and figuring out how to control it later, Native by Design allows the fixture manufacturer and Lutron to develop a more integrated solution from the beginning.
Lutron describes the program as combining its intelligence with world-class design partners to create more seamless experiences across lighting and shading. Lutron
For architects, interior designers, lighting designers and homeowners, that changes the conversation from:
“Can we control this fixture with Lutron?”
to:
“Which fixture do we want, with Lutron already inside it?”
That distinction becomes especially important with Ketra and Rania, because we’re no longer talking only about dimming a fixture.
We’re controlling the actual characteristics of the light it produces.

CEDIA 2026: Native by Design Gets Much Bigger
CEDIA Expo 2026 was a significant expansion of the Native by Design story.
Lutron introduced three new Native by Design partners:

Lutron also showcased existing partnerships with Cerno and Coastal Source, while Niche and Insolroll were featured in the Destination Outdoors experience. Lutron
What makes these additions particularly interesting is their diversity.
We’re talking about everything from handmade sculptural pendants and museum-quality artwork illumination to exterior landscape lighting.
In other words, Ketra and Lutron Intelligent Lighting are moving far beyond the recessed downlight.

Sculptural Lighting Meets Full-Spectrum Intelligent Light
Matthew McCormick Studio’s Line Light integrates Ketra linear lighting into a sculptural decorative fixture.
One of our favorite new Native by Design collaborations is with Matthew McCormick Studio.
The collaboration brings Ketra linear lighting into Matthew McCormick’s sculptural Line Light collection.
That is a much bigger deal than it may initially sound.
Traditionally, a designer might specify a statement pendant as a decorative element while using Ketra recessed fixtures around it to provide the sophisticated lighting.
Now the decorative fixture itself can become part of the Ketra lighting environment.

That means the architectural lighting and decorative lighting no longer need to feel like two separate systems.

MerlinLight + Ketra
Museum-Quality Lighting for Artwork
MerlinLight combines precision optical framing with Lutron lighting technology for fine art, furnishings and architectural elements.
For homes with significant artwork, MerlinLight may be one of the most technically interesting additions to Native by Design.
MerlinLight specializes in museum-quality optical framing projectors.
Rather than simply aiming a spotlight toward a painting, a framing projector allows light to be precisely shaped around the artwork.
The effect can be dramatic: the artwork appears illuminated while considerably less stray light falls on the surrounding wall.
Through Native by Design, MerlinLight uses Lutron lamps to provide precisely rendered illumination for fine art, sculpture, furnishings and architectural elements. Lutron also notes that the system provides a safe UV output for sensitive materials. Lutron
For galleries, collectors and residences containing important artwork, this creates an entirely new application for Lutron Intelligent Lighting.
And with Ketra’s Vibrancy capability, lighting isn’t limited to changing brightness or color temperature.
Ketra can change the way the light renders color without changing the apparent color temperature of the light itself.
That’s an extraordinarily powerful tool when lighting art.

Ted Bradley Studio brings Lutron Intelligent Lighting into handcrafted porcelain Dome and Ring light sculptures
Ted Bradley Studio takes Native by Design in yet another direction.
The studio is known for handmade porcelain lighting sculptures, particularly its recognizable Ring and Dome designs.
Now those fixtures can incorporate Lutron Intelligent Lighting.
This is exactly where we think Native by Design gets exciting.
A statement fixture doesn’t have to sit outside the intelligent lighting environment.
The statement fixture can become part of it.
A dining-room sculpture, for example, can participate in the same lighting scenes and changing light environment as the architectural lighting throughout the surrounding room.

Coastal Source VIA: Ketra and Rania Go Outdoors
Coastal Source VIA extends Lutron Intelligent Lighting into the landscape with outdoor fixtures designed around Lutron lighting technology.
One of the Native by Design developments we’re most excited about is the collaboration between Lutron and Coastal Source.
The companies have developed VIA, an outdoor Intelligent Lighting solution.
At CEDIA 2026, Lutron showcased VIA as part of its expanded Native by Design ecosystem and announced that the outdoor solution was available for preorder. Lutron

Why should the lighting experience stop when you walk outside?
A residence may have sophisticated Ketra and Rania lighting inside, but historically the landscape lighting was often a completely separate world—different fixtures, different light sources, different dimming characteristics and different color quality.
VIA begins to break down that boundary.
For a large residential property, that opens the possibility of treating the interior architecture, terraces, pathways, gardens and landscape as one coordinated lighting experience.
For homeowners already considering Ketra or Rania, this is a particularly important development.

Cerno fixtures with Lutron Intelligent Lighting can take advantage of Ketra’s sophisticated color rendering and Vibrancy control.
Cerno demonstrates another major advantage of Native by Design: bringing sophisticated light quality into decorative fixtures.
Lutron specifically highlights Cerno fixtures using Ketra’s Vibrancy control, which can enhance how colors in artwork and objects appear. Lutron
That becomes especially interesting around artwork, wood, stone, textiles and other materials where the spectrum of the light can dramatically affect how the material is perceived.
Instead of using Ketra only in the ceiling around a decorative fixture, the decorative fixture itself can produce intelligent light.

Native by Design isn’t simply a Ketra fixture program.
It’s becoming a broader design ecosystem around Lutron.
Meanwhile, Ketra and Rania Keep Expanding
Ketra produces natural white light from 1,400K to 10,000K, along with 16.7 million colors and tunable color rendering through Vibrancy.
Native by Design is only half of the story.
Lutron has simultaneously expanded the Ketra and Rania product families themselves, creating more ways to use the same quality of light throughout a project.
Lutron’s current Intelligent Lighting portfolio spans three primary families:
Ketra — Lutron’s most sophisticated full-spectrum light source.
Rania — exceptional natural tunable-white lighting based on technology derived from Ketra’s color science.
Lumaris — tunable-white intelligent lighting for a broader range of applications.
Lutron currently positions their white-light ranges at 1,400K–10,000K for Ketra, 1,800K–5,500K for Rania, and 1,800K–4,000K for Lumaris. Lutron
Ketra: Still the Benchmark
Ketra remains Lutron’s flagship Intelligent Lighting technology.
Rather than simply using conventional white LEDs, Ketra mixes color to create white light.
That gives Ketra an extraordinarily broad 1,400K–10,000K natural-white range, along with 16.7 million colors.
But color-changing capability isn’t actually the feature we find most interesting.
It’s Vibrancy.
Vibrancy allows us to alter the spectral recipe of white light so that colors within artwork, furniture and finishes can become more or less vivid—without simply changing the color temperature.
Ketra also incorporates Color Lock, which continuously monitors and adjusts the light source to maintain color consistency over its life.
The current family now spans downlights, lamps, linear lighting and track lighting. Lutron’s newest additions include the D2 Remodeler, A20 lamps and expanded S30/S38 PAR options. Lutron
The Ketra D2 Remodeler is especially important.
It brings the two-inch Ketra aperture to finished ceilings, making Ketra significantly more practical for renovations.
The D2 Remodeler is available as fixed, adjustable and wall-wash configurations. Lutron
Rania: Natural White Light Without Going Full Ketra
Rania provides natural tunable-white light from approximately 1,800K to 5,500K and is designed natively for Lutron control.
Rania may ultimately become one of the most important products in Lutron’s residential lighting portfolio.
It brings technology derived from Ketra’s color science into a three-channel natural-white light engine spanning approximately 1,800K to 5,500K. Lutron
Unlike Ketra, Rania isn’t intended to provide millions of saturated colors.
And that’s exactly the point.
Not every space needs full-color Ketra.
Many rooms simply need exceptionally good white light that can move naturally from warm evening illumination toward brighter, cooler daytime light.
Rania now extends beyond recessed fixtures into lamps and flexible tape lighting, allowing the same character of natural white light to continue into decorative fixtures, millwork, coves, cabinetry and other architectural details. Lutron
Ketra vs. Rania: You Don’t Necessarily Have to Choose
This is an important point, and one we discuss frequently with clients.
A project doesn’t necessarily need to be a “Ketra house” or a “Rania house.”
We can use each technology where it makes sense.
For example:
Ketra might be used in a living room containing important artwork, a primary entertaining space, dining room or other visually critical areas.
Rania might provide natural white light throughout bedrooms, hallways and secondary spaces where full-spectrum color isn’t necessary.
Rania tape light can continue that light into millwork and architectural details.
Ketra can illuminate artwork.
And Native by Design fixtures can bring the lighting environment into decorative fixtures.
Now Coastal Source can extend the concept into the landscape.
The result isn’t really a collection of lighting products anymore.
It’s an ecosystem.
What Native by Design Means for the Future of Lutron
For decades, lighting control largely started at the dimmer.
A fixture manufacturer made the fixture.
A lighting designer specified it.
An electrician installed it.
And the control manufacturer figured out how to control it.
Intelligent lighting changes that architecture.
With Ketra and Rania, the light source itself becomes part of the control system.
Native by Design takes that idea another step by allowing manufacturers to design around the Lutron technology from the beginning.
That means fewer compromises between:
Decorative lighting and architectural lighting.
Fixture design and quality of light.
Interior and exterior lighting.
Lighting specification and lighting control.
And perhaps most importantly:
The technology can disappear.
That’s ultimately what a great lighting system should do.
